First of all this will be my last post of the year so a very happy new year.
Been watching Tarkovsky filmography from this week and I have watched 5 of them. Yesterday I watched Solaris and what a film it was.
First of all its very difficult for me to choose between 2001 and this but I guess I will choose this one because of its emotions. Even tough Stanley Kubrick is one of my favourite directors I have to admit that he was quite a emotionally distant director which was very clear In 2001. Even tough i consider it one of the greatest film ever made still it was a very emotionally distant film.
On the other hand Solaris feels more human and personal it feels so real. Personally I agree with the ideas shown in the film regarding evolution. We should never forget our roots. I am not saying science is bad, with the help of science we made so many medicines and vaccines but we also made atomic bomb because of our greed to grow and be first. We can see that how dependent we have become of our own inventions. It's true what snaut said that "we don't need other planets we need mirrors".
I also the film also questions when we love someone, who do we love? That person, or our idea of that person? Through chris's character we can see that . I feel in the end he has deliberately chosen to live in Solaris because he wants to live with person who matches with his ideas.
Also the film is visually stunning like any other Tarkovsky film.
What do you think about the film? Would love to know your opinion.
