My preference is for writers like the Coen brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and Cameron Crowe. All their movies have absolute top tier dialogue, but I find myself cringing at 90% of the dialogue in films these days. Even if everything else is good, I can have a hard time finding a movie enjoyable if the dialogue is even just mediocre. I really can’t stand the dialogue from the duo of Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus in particular. Especially because it really ruins what are otherwise awesome movies. I also just watched The Gray Man and couldn’t help but think how the dialogue completely sank what could have been a pretty solid movie.
If you think of a writer with a similar style to Tarantino, Crowe, or the Coens, please comment a few of their movies too!
Edit: even though he only has a few movies under his belt, I think a hidden gem is Ben Affleck. I really liked the dialogue in Goodwill Hunting, Gone Baby Gone, and The Town.
Edit#2: I’m adding David O. Russell. Absolute god tier dialogue.
