I've been watching horror movies my whole life, my mom is a scary flick addict and its all she watches, I was raised watching whatever she could find in blockbuster, on tv or in theaters.

one series though really messed me up as a kid, "Child Play". Chucky was and still does get to me, and I say that as a 36yr old man. specifically the first 2 films, nowadays hes just kinda silly scary. kid me just couldnt figure out how or why he worked, chucky was evil incarnate to me, a doll, a murderer who could scamper off and fuckin kill you at any moment.

skip ahead to megan, i'm a techie, i work with computers all day, i get them. my mom is allergic to tech, shes bad with her phone and if the roku acts up she gets sad and just gives up til someone fixes it, if you placed a laptop in her lap she'd consider that an insult and you an enemy.

I mention that because she watched Megan and it shocked her to her core, i wasnt expecting that, she watched horror classics like they were nothing, but megan? for the first time in years i saw her get uneasy, then it made sense, she cant stand tech and a doll thats powered by it, listens, learns...her worse nightmare.

she understood chucky was a killer who voodoo'd himself into a doll, big woop. she doesnt get why someone would make anything like megan and then leave it be(she's a mom mom, loves her kids)seeing her change her voice and trick people and do so many other things floored her, for me it was neat to see how a flick can get at someones real fears in such an acute way.

Told my wife this and she agreed. M3GAN is what I believe most humans fear. AI with the physical means to do what it wants. Not restrained by programming.

I really enjoyed the movie, just watched it this evening. Sure it's no Ex Machina, but still it was decent and thought provoking.

If anything my only grumble was that it felt a little rushed and over too soon. I'd have liked more development and a longer 2nd and 3rd act. There was much that was done well and it was one of those movies where it felt like almost not a single shot was unnecessary.

I feel like there was more to the movie and it got removed so it can keep its PG13 rating.

Ah, fair enough, that makes sense. I'd wanted more from the scenes at the launch event, it felt like they could have fit 20 minutes of action and suspense there without losing pace as well as the final act feeling all too brief.

Decent movie just the same.

I mean it’s not great, but it was entertaining and a nice horror escape from all of the stupid paranormal jump scare filled crap of the last 20 years since paranormal activity.

I’ve noticed with my friends and I there’s two camps of horror movie lovers.

  1. The camp that gets scared at horror movies that depict something that could conceivably happen. Like serial killer movies, or movies like Megan.

  2. Then there’s the camp that gets scared at movies that is supernatural. Paranormal Activity, Exorcist, anything involving spirits or ghosts.

There’s some overlap and there are people who get scared at both, but my own anecdotal experience is that a lot of people get scared at one and enjoy the other but isn’t scared by it.

That M3gan wasn’t programmed with Asimov’s laws of robotics is nuts.

Yeah Chucky got to me as a kid, even though the plot is bogus when you’re a kid you’re imagination focuses on the outcome not how it came to be. Pet Semetary as well. I want really exposed to Freddy and Jason till I was an adult. Jason is realistic as far as a slasher is much more likely to happen in real life.

Two things that scare me; creepy kids and human-like robots. I very much enjoyed this movie, even if some bits were cheesy (like when she sings)
