Romcoms don't win awards.

And they shouldn't. The vast majority are all formulaic failed comedies written by uncreative writers.

Romcoms is the genre that's least dependent on writing though. The classic Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts rom coms are just carried by their charms

Historically that's not true. Shakespeare in Love, Terms of Endearment, Annie Hall, The Apartment, and Marty all won Best Picture, to say nothing of acting awards for As Good As It Gets, The Goodbye Girl, Silver Linings Playbook, etc.

EDIT: Highly amused by the "those don't count" replies.

The vast majority of the movies you listed could easily lean drama with comedy elements. Everyone knows a romcom when they see it, most of those movies definitely defy romcom status imo.

I wouldn't consider any of those to be in the genre of romcoms as we tend to define it personally. They have romance and comedy, but there's a fine line between Silver Linings Playbook and There's Something About Mary, and Bros is on the wrong side of that line for awards.

I don't think that line is very fine either. They're clearly in different genres.
