The academy awards certain kinds of films that contribute to certain kinds of movie going experiences.
Eichner’s on-screen persona doesn’t align with the kind of film the academy awards and his interactions with the press over the film’s failure definitely didn’t contribute to the kind of movie going experience the academy awards.

Most Hollywood Directors, Producers and Stars know better than to say anything that may distract viewers from watching their films. By Eichner's own actions and words during the press briefings he alienated more people by assuming they would automatically not watch because they were "homophobic". While that may have been true in some cases, he alienated far more with his asinine assumption publicly.

Oh, I didn't hear about his press interactions. I can definitely see that being a factor in this. Thanks!

He was a complete asshole shitting on other queer movies just because they were released on streaming platforms and then he was crying about how no one saw the movie because of homophobia.

Not only that, he was was saying before it even came out that if it didn't do well it would be because of homophobia. He was basically getting ahead of the failure.

Yikes ok. That's a shitty approach to have. Starting to make a lot more sense to me now.

Yeah, I like billy and he’s a really funny guy, but he did the rounds on podcast before it came out and basically said “If you don’t go see this in the theater you’re a homophobe.” I’m paraphrasing, but that was the message he was pitching. It turned me off to even seeing the movie. Plus, there’s no benefit to seeing a rom-com in the theater vs seeing it on a streaming site. I’m sure I’ll watch it when it shows up on Netflix.

He always comes off like a total asshole. When I first started seeing him pop up in segments to seemingly aggravate random people on the street I couldn't believe anyone thought it was funny, but he wouldn't go away. Casting him as the lead of a movie was an awful move, and hopefully it doesn't happen again after this train wreck.

He was such a dick. These days, rom coms are rarely released in theatres and if they are, it's George Clooney and Julia Roberts. I mean, sorry bro. But calm down.
Honestly I saw Bros alone and the other two groups in the theatre left before the halfway point, leaving me as the last one. I really wanted to like it, I thought the trailer looked adorable and I've loved other gay rom coms before. But Billy Eichner's character was such an insufferable smart-ass that I kinda hated him from the get go, and the humor didn't really hit for me honestly.
