A great example is Prometheus.
The viral videos, fake website & the first teaser succeeded in creating an air or mystery and hype around the movie. Endless theories and speculation about what the plot would be, how it linked to Alien and what epic mysteries it contained.
Then the movie came out and it was....fine. Most of the fan theories were better than what we ended up with.
