Unless he can prove the mother is negligent it's not likely he'll get full custody. He does need a lawyer to protect his rights though. Assuming both parents are ok for the child the most likely arrangement is shared custody.

From what I hear, the mom isn't all that great but as far as what the courts would see idk

He'd have to prove she's not fit. And that is very hard to do. A lawyer would know best and since you asked for a recommendation I'm going to assume that's what he will do.
