NJ born and raised, but moved away when I was 22 and back when I was 38.

Not being able to pump my own gas is the worst. Our gas stations are almost always awful, and it takes you 2-3 times as long to be there. I thought everyone was suckers for pumping their own gas while I sat comfortably in my car, until I had to do it. The time savings alone...

NJ > CO transplant and I couldn't agree more. People who gloat about not having to pump their own gas have no idea how much better it really is to do it yourself.

As we transition to EVs you will be doing it yourself at some point... some already!

The only real issue, at least up north, is I'm not convinced we have the space for the huge gas stations that you see in the midwest.

I don't even mean the Texas Bucky's. Just a regular one, well lit, clean, fully covered, with 6-20 pumps. Most gas stations up here are basically falling apart, with too few pumps, no covering, and not enough land to build something spacious and comfortable.

Not having a covering is an issue, that I agree with. Staying out of the elements makes a big difference when pumping gas. But you don't need more pumps, because it's faster to pump your own. I'm in and out in less than 5 minutes.

For the people who are fast or in a rush it can absolutely be faster, but for people who take their time it can also be a lot slower (old people that stretch everytime they get out of the car, people leaving their car at the pump to go in and get smokes, people hogging the pump while they finish reading/texting something, airheads who have no idea other people are waiting on them etc). It might not be a lot, but it adds up quick. All it takes is a couple slow people and half the station is bottlenecked. I live in PA now and see people do this all the time, but it still tends to be faster than NJ because there's so many pumps you're never waiting on anyone else.
