I'm looking to get a mortgage and auto loan in the near future in the more affluent parts of Monmouth County (Fair Haven, Rumson, etc). I have always banked with our local Wells Fargo branch because of my parents, but I'm looking to get away from the old school banks. Are there any good local credit unions? I have only heard of Affinity or United Teletech but know little about them.

My savings are on Ally but I still use checking with Wells.

I can't offer any firsthand experience on how good they are, but I know that First Atlantic Federal Credit Union has a few branches in Monmouth County.

There's one called First Financial, but I don't know much about them.

I use First Financial. Their rates are pretty good, and they have a branch in Freehold.

So why a credit union?

The funny thing is I have 9 guys managing my portfolio but some of them use credit unions and not BOA/Merrill where I'm invested at.

I should probably ask them but just wondering why you're going that route?

Credit unions are owned by the members (customers) of the credit union, and are not-for-profit. I’m a member of a credit union. I pay no fees for my bank accounts, and get (somewhat) not-insignificant dividends for both my checking and savings. Also, my mortgage is through the credit union, and was a MUCH better deal than any other banks in the area could provide (mortgage brokers regularly refer people to the credit union I use for refi’s). Also, they have pretty competitive CD promotions from time to time.

I will never go back to BoA.
