Has this happened to anyone recently? They installed the new smart meter a couple of weeks ago and now this month's bill seems wildly off. Did they just read the old meter incorrectly? This is for my basement meter which nobody currently lives in

This is clearly an error... Notify also the state's utility commission (don't know the name) and Let them know of the character of your dispute. It should be handled promptly, the state will be on their case to assure that

UPDATE: Thanks for the responses everyone. I contacted both PSEG and BPU, this was resolved and my bill looks normal again.

Was a meter reading error as suspected. The reading under the "removed meter" section is wildly off, and was a result of a misreading when removing the old meter during installation of the new meter. Not sure where the random numbers come from, since it's not like digits were off by one or something like that. Perhaps they had a reading from some other meter saved and submitted it as mine. Not sure.

There have been several prior posts here by people in the same situation -new meter installed, bill doesn't math correctly. Just call them/chat/whatever to raise the issue.

What incentive do they give you to install a smart meter?

The incentive is that they no longer have to go on your property to get a meter reading.

It went from 44218 to 22398... sounds like they actually owe you money.

Almost look like the meter reads W-hr, not kW-hr.

Contact the BPU. I wouldn't even contact PSE&G first. It's far easier to contact the BPU than to contact any utility.
