TLDR: What do I take to the DMV for realID if I have no paper documents because I transact everything online?

This is 10% question and 90% rant.

To get a RealId, I need to show up with documents such as utility bills, bank statements, etc. and copies won't suffice.

Apparently, the RealID/Guv'mint is still in the last century. I do all of my bills/banking/correspondences save one electronically! I don't HAVE "bank statements" or " utility bills" to carry anywhere! The first step of the document selection process lists 7 kinds of eligible documents; I have two of them and I'm not sure I'm accurately reading the description of one of those!

The second step (prove your SSN is yours) requires something from a business to prove it; my govt issued SSN card isn't good enough, but a paystub, 1099, or W-2 are good enough because apparently businesses are more trustworthy than the government. EVEN TO THE GOVERNMENT!

Google search sucks now, I couldn't find anything wrt to this problem on the DMV site or the realid site.

And don't get me started on the fact I have to travel 20 miles one-way instead of using the DMV office three freakin blocks from me!

EDIT: Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions and real-life examples. Ppl in here have used (unofficial) copies of docs and multiple docs that aren't "allowed" to be used together, despite what it says on the official websites. Guess it's time to make multiple copies of everything JIC! Thanks again!

MVC in Wayne is just fine with print outs from online bills/banks, they are also just fine with your original unlaminated SSN card. I just did this a week ago there without issue.

Another nearby MVC is pickier...

You just print stuff out or even go to your bank and ask them to print it for you if you don't have a printer

Hardly anybody gets mailed statements anymore. That's why MVC accepts printouts of electronic statements, 1099s and so on. I walked out with a real ID in less than a half hour. Just follow the checklist and do the work to compile it all. It's really no big deal.

IIRC there was a footnote saying "copies not allowed unless signed and sealed by SomeOfficialTwat". :-? I guess I'll find out!

That applies to birth certificates.

Yeah it sucks big time.

I showed up with my birth certificate, social security card, passport, current valid driver's license and an OnStar bill because every other bank statement and bill I have is on autopay and I had no other mail around and didn't think to print anything out.

They cleared me at the Randolph DMV at their pre check window and after sitting around for 45 minutes they called me to the window and told me the OnStar bill wasn't valid proof of address even though they told me it was at the initial doc review window.

Nothing can convince me that requiring someone with a passport, social security card, birth certificate and current valid license to also produce a utility bill or bank statement would enhance safety for anyone in any way.

TLDR: fuck the government.

:-? It also said on the site (I'm beginning to think I shouldn't believe anything I read on there!) that they won't accept a bank stmt AND a credit card statement. Were they implying "from the same bank"?

Former MVC employee here. You’ve read too far into it .. don’t overcomplicate it. Bring the following and you will be fine:

Primary Document: Original Birth Certificate or Passport - 4 points Secondary Documents: NJ drivers license - 1 point & proof of address Social security card 1 point & proof of SSN 1 utility bill with full name and address no more than 90 days old (print out is fine) - proof of address

This covers your 6 points, 2 proofs of address and 1 proof of ssn and will be more than acceptable for RealID as long as:

  1. the names and addresses on all of these documents match identically
  2. All documents are unexpired
  3. None of the documents are damaged or tampered with
  4. No copies of anything other than printed utility bill

Some extra things you can bring just in case are: Marriage certificate Military discharge papers Health insurance card Debit card from major bank However if you have all the documents mentioned above you won’t need them.

Truly there is no rush to get the RealID and people lose their minds over it for no reason. The date for it to become a requirement has been pushed back about four times. It gives you absolutely no extra benefits besides flying domestically and if you have a passport you don’t need it.

Be kind to the dmv workers assisting you. Fill out your forms correctly with no mistakes, bring exactly what I told you to, make sure all documents are organized and names/addresses match identically. They have the power to make your day miserable and they will invoke it if they feel like it. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the sanity check. I don't have a problem with the documents gathering, it was the restrictions--like "no copies accepted"--that was frustrating me.

IDGAF about RealID but my license is up for renewal and I can't do it via online/email since they're "upgrading" me to RealId as well.

Always good advice. :-)
