Debating on a move to move to NJ

I’m about to be priced out of NYC, was looking into Hudson county, mostly union, weehawken, or west ny. Any suggestions?

What’s good with east orange or Newark ? Safe? Suggestions?

I’m thinking about my commute. I’d be driving to the city daily. Don’t want to be too far inland.

Yea NJT would be convenient, but I’m driving and want to take that into consideration.

West Orange is livable, east orange is not.

I moved from the city to West Orange and only lasted 18 months. Very boring and a rough transition if you’re used to a city lifestyle. But having a car would help.

oh.. yeah, it's terrible if you prefer that sort of life. It's a beautiful quiet town most of the time though, lots of parks. Lots to do.

I disagree. If you think west orange is livable then by your standards then so is east orange and Newark. I’d recommend people to live north as much as they can from Newark before getting into Patterson.

What? West Orange is a far more developed and safe town than East Orange has plenty of quality housing, property taxes are higher, its in a great school system, Newark is also much different than it used to be.

I've yet to ever shoot someone or own a gun btw

Hudson County is expensive and you won't get very much for your money in terms of property size/land, you're paying to be close to NYC.

East Orange - nope

Newark - depends where

If you're not dead set on Hudson County, look at more of Essex County and maybe Union County. Just depends how far you want to be from the city (and where in the city you need to be close to), I'm in Union Township and can be downtown/midtown in 25 minutes by car (with no traffic), if you need to be closer to the Bronx it's about 35 minutes.

You bet. I'm happy to suggest some towns but it really depends how far you want to be (and from which parts of NYC), what your budget is, how much space you want, if you're looking for a more urban or suburban area, time of day you'll be commuting, etc. Even Hudson County by car can take some time due to bridge/tunnel traffic so if you want your commute to stay within 30 minutes (with traffic) you probably want to stick with Hudson or Bergen County, specifically the towns within a few miles of the bridge/tunnels (like the ones you named along with the ones a few others named - Englewood, Fort Lee, Edgewater - these all surround the GWB though).

Driving? First establish parking.. it's almost as expensive as a small NJ apartment in some places.

That’s the thing, I noticed a good amount of rentals come with parking. The ones that are apt buildings.

Union City is Ok. Weehawken is $$$. Jersey City has a lot of construction going on. Hoboken is $$$ & crowded. West New York is like Union City.

You might also consider Edgewater, Ft. Lee & Englewood for a commute over the bridge.

Thanks! Yeah jersey city seems like a parking nightmare anyway & those rents are like NYC 😩. I’ll check those other places out.

NJ is getting insanely expensive so if you’re priced out in nyc it’s not much better here especially jersey city weehawken Hoboken probably going to leave NJ

I have family living in jersey city. Worth considering but I wouldn’t recommend it. every year we have news of some shootings and killings.

Then you’ll feel at home. Welcome to our garden state. You’ll most likely be working and commuting to New York City. Therefore it makes no sense to live farther south like Middletown or east like Somerville. Too much of a commute for people working in the city.

Places where people go to get high and drugs are sold makes it likely for anyone living nearby to be a target sooner or later. Misdemeanors and petty crimes compared to grand theft auto and killings is a big difference in my book.

OP you cant take nj transit (the train) into midtown? I'd ditch the car for the commute; it would give you way more options. If that's a possibility, let me know and I can give you my personal recs (i'm moving to NYC dec through february at some point, BK, so i have the opposite accommodations to make)

understood! So if a car is necessary and you will be commuting in, I would say live near to a highway, with the three access points to the city being the GWB, Lincoln and Holland tunnels. Decent and affordable towns (house, apartments) , you have Clifton right off rt 3, Saddle brook and Elmwood park right off 80, and Kearny has backroad 7 and 78. If you want me to be more specific, also let me know if you are looking to rent an apartment or house ! NJ is pretty diverse, I wouldn't bother with anything outside of Essex Bergen Passaic Hudson (I own a home in Union county but its too far for me, so I rented it)

Where is your work location in NYC? That makes a lot of difference. Like, do you work in lower manhattan and you will be taking the Holland Tunnel into NYC?

Ok, well then I guess you would just choose whichever place works best for you (where you can find the best location for the rent you can afford) in a location that is accessible to NYC.

I grew up in Bloomfield. Every town has its good and bad sections. But the northern end of Bloomfield is very nice and you’re a stones throw away from route three and it would take you about 14 to 18 minutes to get to the Lincoln Tunnel.

Bergen County in the towns south of Hackensack are ideal. Hasbrouck Heights to North Arlington, all very nice and affordable.
