They're not legally required to allow expired IDs. They may though. Carding is discretionary.

Chances are no, as it's a potential liability if you're not obviously of age.

If your passport isn't expired, then use that.

Yeah I'm sure that would work. It'd be weird, but you should be fine. Bring both so the bouncer has two documents that will corroborate if he's confused.

If a passport is good enough for the DMV and customs , it will be good enough for a bar.

Edit: I should add, it would be weird if you're American, but it's a perfectly valid identification. If someone came from overseas it would make a lot more sense. It would totally work though.

Expired ID is rolling the dice. My license expired and I didn’t realize it and I got turned down at a place that was requiring ID to enter. Another bar down the street used his discretion given the group I was with and explaining it expired that month and hadn’t realized.

You can use a passport as one of your 6 forms of ID for a DL, it would be weird if you couldn't use an unexpired passport for ID in a bar.
