197 bus to Warwick. Sit back, relax, watch the Highlands pass by. Look over the Wanaque and Monksville Reservoirs and go the entire length of Greenwood Lake. Ascend the Bearfort Ridge. Feeling spry? Hike the AT from the creamery/eagle lookout on 17A to the state line trail.
When you get into Warwick, have lunch at one of the spots there, or double back and have a supper at Viaggio in Wayne.

During our kid-free days, I asked to just take a leisurely ride south for my birthday (October). I forget if we started in Atlantic Highlands or Asbury Park, but we hugged the coast and went as far as we could until Rt 35 ended.
I would never do that in the summer, but during the fall it was very nice.

Yes. Atlantic highlands route 36 to 71 to 35 to Island Beach State Park. Nice spring/fall ride. Takes 3 or 4 times as long in the summer.

Yeah, probably Atlantic Highlands because we likely started at Kane Brewing, lol.
ETA: Carton. Duh.

Sunrise Mountain Road, Sandyston to Montague
Old Mine Road / River Road, exit 1 off Route 80 all the way to Port Jervis
Seven Bridges Road, Little Egg Harbor
Henry Hudson Drive, Alpine to Edgewater
Any of the Pine Barrens sand roads from Mount Misery to Whitesbog
and mostly, just, Hunterdon County. Like, almost all of it. Drive your way through Lambertville, Frenchtown, Milford, Califon, High Bridge, Asbury— it’s all just so beautiful.

Ah, yeah, you’re right - Carton is in AH, Kane is in Ocean. We probably hit both that day.

Rt 22 through Union, for a hair-raising, Dirty Harry-style drive. Top it off by taking the Parkway up to Rt 21, and then Rt 80 east.
Fun, fun, fun.

Rt 29 from Lambertville north to Frenchtown then I think it turns into rt 12. It's along the Delaware and in the winter there's little frozen waterfalls everywhere

That road goes from Frenchtown to Flemington; not a scenic drive by any stretch of the imagination.

Holy shit! Came here to say this. Especially going south from the rt 12 circle in Raritan twp

Nope! I cycle a bunch, but these roads are the discovery of just driving all over the state a lot just for the sake of exploring.

I like mt pleasant road coming out of McGuire AFB and river road, north of Milford. Jersey doesn’t have many scenic roads. More like “scenic 1/2 mile” here and there. Riding motorcycles here really sucks.
