The worst part is that the city is not strategically important, but once Rashists are done with it, they will bomb to oblivion some next city.

Yes and no. Bakhmut isn't some big transportation hub, but on the other hand if your goal is to capture the Donbas you can't do so without capturing Bakhmut and the cities that Bakhmut is shielding like Kramatorsk and Slovyansk. So long as Bakhmut holds the cities behind are spared from the suffering the same fate.
