You're probably right. As much as it bothers me that this happened, I also feel bad for the driver, who must feel terrible about it.

It could have been a lot worse. A few years ago when I was living there and elderly driver got up on the sidewalk and struck several kids walking home from school. Elderly driving is a serious issue there, especially as the entire population starts to skew older and older because of the low birth rates.
