Growing up with guns there were 3 types
Handguns, shotguns, and long guns. It’s a nice catch all for any type of rifle (though honestly the modern AR/AK would’ve been completely out of the realm of consideration with my family growing up. Long gun is a deer rifle as far as we were concerned because that was the only rifle people could have)

I was raised in the mid atlantic, maybe it’s regional or just a family thing? I do appreciate the news using the term when they’re unsure of the weapon outside of “it’s a gun but not a pistol”
