Why do largely successful people do this? It's not like he was broke or something?

Impulse, and lack of impulse control isn’t something unique to a certain socioeconomic group, but lack of impulse and empathy is common in people who have little to worry about financially (in general)

Success doesn't necessarily mean you have other important things like impulse control, criticial thinking, or humility.

Then take the lack of those things and combine it with (likely) alcohol impairment and ego filled young men and you end up with a tragedy like this.

So many small steps lead to a young woman dying and these young men likely spending most if not all of their adult lives in jail. Over what?

A girl blowing you off when you approached her? Feeling embarassed? A petty argument?

It's nonsensical.

A lot of times these guys are deeply tied to the communities they come out of and all the shit that goes with it.

Successful in a lot of circles isn’t equivalent to money. Same thing happened with Aaron Hernandez. A lot of athletes literally only have that going for them. People will say “hard work and determination” gets people into the upper level of sports when really it’s 90% genetic lottery. So, while he was successful in sports, he developed zero other life skills. Never needed them because he was destined to just be used for our entertainment.
