Ok.. Wicked! But I have questions.. Why are you the only one who s mind he can not alter? I mean.. Everyone else accepts him as your husband. Your family, your friends, and not from the pictures or papers as the cops did. And why Mae snapped from his grip to help you when she isn't even aware of the spell she s under? And did he create the child (not traditionally, I know) which you also know you don't have just to hold you back? Please give us a follow up

probably easier to convince someone that their friend is married than to convince someone they are in love with someone

He feeds on people believing him voluntarily, so he needs someone uncontrolled for that purpose. The exact person was pretty much just his choice. Mae was probably more capable of noticing the influence due to her previous supernatural experiences.

Her family is subconsciously or maybe consciously homophobic. They want to believe that she's married to a man instead of Emma.
