Is it possible the gnarled tree you saw is/was the tree that had all the souls of the people killed/buried on Kate/TLOS's camp and thus this creature may be in some way related to that tree? I don't remember what's happened to the tree anymore but maybe it wouldn't hurt to hit up TLOS
