It's possible to live a life that doesn't require the help of the police. There are other options.

Possible, but not that dependent on what you do. I mean sure there are plenty of things that will make crime more likely to happen to you. And you can decline to ask for anyone's help in any situation, but the whole thing about violent crimes is that they are things done to you, completely against your will.
Sure, you can go off the grid, live on island so remote there aren't even reptiles to invade your space. You'll reduce the probability of being victimized by a living organism to effectively zero, but that doesn't sound like "other options" on how to live that sounds like an "other option".
Perhaps what I should be asking what you mean by not requiring "the help of the police." Nobody except the dependents of police officers really depend on the police day to day, or even yearly. Perhaps, maybe once a decade over 50% of people will have called the cops once to report something stolen or a possible gunshot.
