That reminded me of the movie Tremors, when they blew up the first graboid.

A fellow person of culture I see. I'd go over and shake your hand....if I wasn't stuck on top of this goddamn building and away from Burt's Rec Room.

I love how writing can really dramatically say something, by distinctly -not- saying it:
>The hope was that it would result in small pieces for animals to consume. The result was an event that would be remembered in the history books.

" The thinking here was that the whale would be blown into small pieces, which would be eaten by sea gulls, and that would be that. A textbook whale removal...I am probably not guilty of understatement when I say that what follows, on the videotape, is the most wonderful event in the history of the universe."
Dave Barry's writeup of this incident will live in my memory forever.

I would expect the Portland Pickles to do something like this (if you haven't heard of them, definitely check out their background in terms of social media and interesting promotions; super fun and hilarious)
I've actually been to exploding whale state park as it's something Oregonians have a unique sense of pride in. Glad the Ems are honoring it. They also did a Portlandia night about a decade ago honoring the show

San Antonio has the Missions, AA for the Padres. They become the Flying Chanclas twice a month or so during home games. If you know about chanclas, you understand the reference.

Being in Oregon doesn't make things less weird, it makes weird things more normal.

This is classic stuff for minor league baseball.
Paul Schafer co-wrote a song called "It's Raining Men". That day, it was raining whale meat. The beach was angry that day, friends.

“The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds” is probably one of the best lines in the history of journalism, and it cane from the coverage of the event this refers to.
