Reading the article, I don't think that's what the judge was suggesting. I think it's a little more complicated than that, and although I'm not certain I fully agree, I think I understand where they are approaching this from.

I think it was more of a "buck your ideas up, sort yourself out, and you can still have a normal life" type speech, especially since he pointed out how the defendant is still young.

It reads to me like "you're a fuck up, you know you're a fuck up, stop drinking, sort your shit out, but in the meantime you're on the sex offenders register. This is your opportunity. Go."

Ummm… this guy is no longer young. He’s in his mid-thirties, with literally dozens of offenses on his record. And sexual assault indicates he’s only getting worse. A “wife and family”, at this point, would be nothing more than punching bags for him, and his pathos would be carried on in his children.

While I get what you are saying, the judge is misguided.

Hey! That's young. :(.

From a physical standpoint, indeed mid-30s is not old.

But from a developmental standpoint, particularly for a relentlessly dimwitted criminal like this whose crimes against victims are clearly escalating over time, it’s VERY old. Who he is today was formed a looong time ago.

THIS is the part that's getting the judge off the rails imo. He seems to be channeling archaic tropes like "Rub some dirt on it!!" or "Walk it off!!" to motivate the guy to be less-shitty as a human.

So, you're saying there's a chance?

Not without proper support network that don't exist in today's society

Its not old, but its past the point of change or redemption for most people.

Plenty of people pull their shit together in their thirties, or even later.

That doesn't mean someone who has built their life on being a piece of shit is capable of that. But age is not the issue.

I hope so. I'm in my 30's and still trying to get my life together. Feeling like it's basically over and i wasted it. No kids, no house, not doing the job I wanted, depressed and never feeling fulfilled. Each day blends into the next.

Well I’m assuming you aren’t a rapist, so you’ve got that going for you.

Remember, you don’t have to outrun the bear. Just the worst humans.

SashaNightWing t1_irwqv4o wrote

That is true, I'm not a rapist! There are positives hahaha. Just wish i was closer to where I thought i would be at this age hahaha.

I dunno, the ones who got all the steps done in the right order are all pretty miserable too. Think the whole idea was a no-win scenario, so don't beat yourself up for losing.

I never got to do what I thought I would be doing at this age! I just decided to live my life as it is, instead of pining for the one I wanted.

And this guy can do that by adopting a dog or something.

While I understand what you are saying, the conclusion of your opinion is that rehabilitation doesn’t happen. I’m not sure I like that nor agree

−1

coyote-1 t1_irxlfi5 wrote

Rehabilitation does happen… but I’m pretty sure that it doesn’t happen if someone’s offenses are becoming worse. When you’ve recently graduated from mere property crime to sexual assault, you are NOT showing a proclivity to ceasing a life of crime anytime soon.

DeathByLemmings t1_irxn3ha wrote

I still do not agree with throwing in the towel. What you’re suggesting is that it would be better for him to be put to death now

coyote-1 t1_irxwq9n wrote

I’m not saying either one. I’m saying it’s an error to hold out ”wife and children” as a path forward for him at this time.

Why "at this time"? It might be ok later? Why?

coyote-1 t1_iryp5wf wrote

To me, a person like that has to prove he is OK with himself before ever considering putting him in a position of influence or authority. If he can somehow manage to turn it around, to learn what he needs to learn, then perhaps somewhere down the road he could become a useful family man.

Given his record I highly doubt it.

Mikimao t1_irvrslh wrote

Yeah, he didn't encourage him at all. He basically just said he can still get his life together from this point forward... A "you screwed up, but you don't have to keep screwing up." not a go out and find someone else to terrorize.

4 1/2 year sentence, and a seven-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

So pick and mix all you want but the headline is a lie in context of what was said. Threshold wasn't met by the prosecution unfortunately to put him away for longer.

Dont think Sexual offenses is something you can come back from, they cant be reinserted into society, not because the offender doesnt want to get rehabilitated but because sexual offenses carry the worst stigma in society, most if no all people wouldnt want to see or be near a sex offender, he probably will need to live a life of isolation, i dont what was the judge thinking, he knows no woman would want to have something to do with the person in question.

It sounds like the judge is suggesting women are rehabilitation centres for broken men.

He needs to stay far away from women. Forever.
