??? Word and phrase are pretty much the basic building blocks of language after the alphabet.

That's why we have etymology.
That's why 2+2 will always make 4, but the common word you use for those things in your head you see with are called eyeballs only (relatively) recently thanks to a guy named William Shakespeare.
