Fun fact, Dutch surnames are written with spaces in between. His name in Dutch would be “van der Donck”.
“van der” (sometimes also “van de” or just “van”) means something like “of the”. It is always written in lowercase.

learned this when i was reading abt cornelius vanderbilt and i found out his name just means "from de bilt", which is a town in holland
