Wow. Looks Hopper-esque.

Where is/was this? West Side?

Lafayette St and Great Jones Street in NoHo.

Here's an old article about the diner, and here's how it looks today.

I’m old and confused. This is not a photograph from 1979, right?

I believe it's a painting by Richard Estes, who had a photorealistic style. But OP used an AI software to artificially extend the painting's borders on both sides.

The center of the image is a photograph from 1979.

The outside of the image was painted by an AI, trained on hundreds of millions of images of city streets (and other things). It is essentially "filling in the blank."

Oh, and if you're wondering how we can possibly get a computer to do something seemingly impossible, like painting the non-existent parts of a photograph, here's how they do it!

Looks really great. I don’t think I fully understand the processing it went through, but it’s a really great photo none the less.

Cool, I had breakfast there many times on my way to work in SoHo. Breakfast special #2, scrambled eggs and sausage, whole wheat toast, tea with milk and juice. The building on the left with the white arch is the firehouse: "The building is a Beaux Arts structure built in 1899 by Ernest Flagg and W.B. Chambers." Wikipedia

Oh damn, didn't expect it to be that central Manhattan, thought it was like somewhere out in Brooklyn.

Guess that's 70's/80's NYC for you.

The streets are cleaner then than now. A earity in the 70s. I guess less people/foot traffic
