Ari Kagan switched parties so he didn't have to run in a primary against Justin Brannan and lose in his newly drawn district. That's about it.

Another case for ranked choice voting at the general election, not just primaries. If anything, I'm in favor of doing away with primaries, and just doing an open general election with ranked choice voting.
It gets rid of weird shit like this where people are incentivized to evade party primaries because they know they'll lose a primary, but win a general election.

Isn’t the city council subject to ranked choice voting? Or is it just the mayor?

Party primaries and special elections only. The general election is FPTP.

End primaries.
Just do a ranked choice, non-partisan general election.

Brannan has a heavily gerrymandered district. They literally split Dyker Heights into 3 districts and made a 1 block wide connector through it for Justin.
We need fair districts. Gerrymandering is the oldest form of voter suppression.

Some voter suppression. Same party always wins

That's how voter suppression works

Ranked choice should've been implemented here as non-partisan, with only one election per cycle, like it's been done in many other cities.
