Hey what’s up guys, I’m going to be visiting Philadelphia pretty soon and I’m excited to check out the Italian Market. Never been to Philadelphia before but I love checking out little Italy’s whenever and wherever I can.

What are the best places to shop at? The best place for meats, cheeses, desserts, etc.

Biggest mistake people make when visiting the Italian market is not venturing past Washington Ave to the South or Christian to the North. Most of the famous stuff is Between Washington and Christian on 9th, where you will find Dibruno Bros (meats and cheeses), Fantes (kitchen supplies), Talluto’s (pasta and meatballs), Espositos and Cannullis (butchers), Claudio’s (Italian specialities, definitely get the pesto and Ricotta), Anthony Chocolate house (coffee, gelato, chocolate), Villa di Roma (old school red sauce Italian restaurant and bar), and also a Blue Corn (a great Mexican Restaurant with sidewalk dining). On Christian to the east there is Biedermans (cured fish and other jewish delicacies - get the pastrami salmon). To the west on Christian you’ll find Isgros (Italian bakery, best cookies/cake). North of Christian on 9th is Sarcones bakery (Italian bread - makes Philly sandwiches the best), Angelo’s Pizzeria (a new gem with world class steaks, hoagies, chicken cutlet hoagies), also Kalaya (Thai restaurant). To the south of Washington it’s primarily Mexican until you get to Pats and Geno’s. There’s a slew of awesome Mexican restaurants and taquerias but the most famous and raves about is South Philly Barbecoa, if the line is short (or even if it’s long) get it. Past Pats and Geno’s keep walking south on Passyunk and that brings you into The East Passyunk Ave corridor which has tons of restaurants and bars and shops.

If you end up south of Washington, consider Rim Cafe. Crazy good hot chocolate and plenty of other desserts.

It’s right next to the live bird slaughterhouse … just follow the smell of death and chocolate

Kalaya is closed. They are opening a new spot in Fishtown.

Heard about the Fishtown spot. Didn’t know they closed South Philly. I’ve been away since June

Best dessert is Isgro's. Best cheese/meat is Claudio's (this may be controversial but I think they're better than Di Bruno)

Isgro has the best cannolis. I could take or leave the rest of it

Isgro’s ain’t cheap, but the cookies are amazing. It’s a must. Don’t miss Fante’s kitchen store either.

Isgros no question that place is fantastic. That’s not to say other Italian bakeries aren’t worth checking out but Isgros has the best stuff.

I’d say Claudio’s has a better selection of Italian goods and your staple Italian meats and cheeses but for prosciutto and speciality cheeses DiBrunos is unrivaled. Their house brand olive oil and balsamic vinegar is also excellent.

Google says that’s Mexican food though. My bad, I meant Italian shops

It was a joke but it may be the best restaurant. Ralph’s is good

If you enjoy braised meat at all you should check the barbacoa spot out anyway. They are the best braised meat I have ever had. She has a James Beard award and was featured on Netflix.

This is a great idea considering a mob hit happened there at a Halloween party there!

it’s also a significantly better restaurant then Ralphs lol. I lived directly between the two for 6 years. Id rather go to Villa di Roma over Ralphs anyway.

Ralph's just hasn't been the same for a few years. Not pandemic related, it had fallen off before then. Shame too bc it used to kick ass. Villa di Roma is my call for that sort of place these days too.
