This was pretty similar to what happened to my great great grandfather. He was dumped on the dock at Ellis Island at 11 or 12- his family all got back on the ship to the Netherlands and left him there with absolutely nothing. He spoke only Dutch. He never was quite right in the head according to my grandpa- it’s amazing he made it from those circumstances.

Why would the whole family come all the way over to drop him off? That would be so much more expensive than simply putting him on the ship in the Netherlands
