Isn’t an artificial river just a canal?

Technically there's no issue calling it a canal. Canals are usually for the conveyance of boats. Sometimes people will call it a canal when it's fresh water / irrigation.

I'd throw in the word aquifer just so there's no way we can all settle on a single word to call this.

Right? I was thinking the same thing. Or even an Aqueduct? Granted I have no idea what the purpose of this artificial river is.

one of the Aswan dams, i thought the dam disrupted the natural yearly flooding cycle downriver

the flood used to destroy the crop so they built a dam to hold the water in flood season and store the extra water in a lake but this project is basically extending the nile to the western desert and it has nothing to do with Aswan dam
