I don't think our local government is going to do anything about this when they don't even listen when we vote new stadiums down.

Good luck to them in their cause, but I'd be shocked if it ever happened.

The least they could do is make a rule that if taxpayers build u a stadium, your games play on local stations (no NHL/NFL double platinum Sunday ticket blackout rule in your area ROOT/AT&T sports bullshit)

Looking at the pic, that was an amazing church. Amazing that black people (given all of the discrimination at the time) were able to fund and build something that grand in 1908. Makes you think ...

The Hill District was an amazingly vibrant place back then. It was originally a neighborhood of middle-class blacks. There were a huge number of small businesses. It also drew black people from across the US and even Europe. It was a center for Jazz.

Also the birthplace of August Wilson. It was truly a mecca for black artists and it can't be understated how badly urban renewal fucked that up for this city.

It is nothing short of tragic the way urban planning -- in some ways the antithesis of the free market -- destroyed vibrant black communities in urban centers across the U.S. in the name of "progress."

Absolutely. This one was particularly egregious.

He's actually stated a desire for "reparations" for the church from years ago when is was razed for the old arena. Ain't gonna happen.

The Catholic Church in pittsburgh should be ashamed of itself, among other things, but for keeping Epiphany, because the white people didn’t want to go up to the “black” church one block up. The official reasoning was something along the lines of, this red brick church will remind people of god while they go to the arena, or some lines like that. They also got a ton of money for tearing down the support buildings around it.

I’m not saying old buildings aren’t worth preserving, but they keep closing churches left and right, what’s one more.

Leaving aside that there's two different religions involved... claiming that the white Catholic people went to their Catholic church instead of the black Methodist one is a bit like completing that the basketball players refuse to play in the racquetball room. They're similar spaces, but not the same.

I mean, the Catholic church probably got to stay in part due to white skin and money, but linking the two regions together as interchangeable wouldn't win you fans on either side.

I wasn’t linking the two religions, it was Epiphany and St. Benedict the Moor
