My husband and I have been looking for homes in Pittsburgh for about two months. Yesterday we found a home with a set of city steps next to it. My grandma also has a home with city steps next to hers. I asked my mom about it and the only explanation she could give was that she used to get drunk and high on the steps in high school. I ended up googling it this morning and found this article interesting. Just wanted to share. Pittsburgh’s City Steps

The city steps have been convenient for me to walk the city, but a lot of them are in need of repairs and overgrown. I wish the city would take better care of them

They actually are as of late. It’s slow progress, but a dedicated effort is being put out.

We hung out on them a lot when I was a kid. I always thought they were such a great feature of the city.

Laura Zurowski writes all about the city steps in Pittsburgh. Here is a recent article on the South Side Slopes Step Trek and here is her publication on the steps of Pittsburgh

Thanks for the mention! A new city steps steps walking tour book will be published in 2024 by University of Pittsburgh Press! Stay tuned!

A few years ago on this sub it was big to post city steps. Was kinda cool to see so many random ones you’d never come across otherwise

Is the one that connects to duquesne university. A couple years ago, my uncle and I went to these records exchange across the bridge and I was like, let's cross the bridge. And then I see people walking.down a hillside and I'm like let's walk up those. My uncle wanted to kill me that day.

Walked up those steps, drunk, back to my dorm many times from going to parties or bars on the south side when I was at school there.

I have nostalgia about jumping over the rebar - aren't there something like 213 steps or so?

I’m not sure of the number. What I do know is if I tried to go up those steps now, I’d probably have a cardiac event.

I live in the southside and I love using the steps as a workout tool. Not sure I’d want to rely on them day to day though.

There are some of those steps about a half a block from my house, when I first moved in there was probably 75-100 empty mini Sutter Homes wine bottles under them. Always made me laugh.

Edit: they have all since been cleaned up

Can’t even fathom working like 12 hour in a mill, then waking home up iced steps in the winter. I can however imagine living in a place with no insulation. Good to know some things don’t change.

Humans have been walking year around for their entire existence. Is it really that hard to imagine? Seriously, i'm baffled at how walking could seem unimaginable to anyone. ;-)

Pretty sure you missed inference that it was a tough life.

Most have street names. If are lost, using map, pre gps times, most are not drivable.

Are these the steps that lead to Duquesne? I had to walk up them be time to catch a bus and had a panic attack.

Yes people still get drunk, do drugs, and piss on the steps. You really want to walk down these to get to your house at night ?

Your sidewalks, roads, fields, parks, etc - maybe if we all work together we can improve these sites?

Steps are last on a list that won’t make it to the bottom.
