It is. It depends on if he was eating in an area that is supervised. To teach in VA, your supposed to have proof of CPR training. Some trainings (the one our school nurse certified me with) include the Heimlich maneuver.
ChillOutMetzy t1_j9mlk3b wrote
All teachers have to be cpr certified, and the Heimlich is covered.
Edit- autocorrect on Heimlich

It was used by the supervising admin but failed

It is, and was used.

Used and used correctly are entirely different things
How current are the people in the school on CPR? I lifeguarded for years. If you don’t practice you forget and many people just go through the motions when learning.
“When emergencies happen you rise to the level of your training not the occasion” or whatever

It was used correctly. Confirmed by the doctor at the hospital. First responders did all they could. Don’t be so quick to blame someone for not helping enough, when they were trying to save a life and nothing could be done.

I didn’t blame anyone for “not helping enough”. I’m just point out that it can be done… but done improperly. Weird reply

Sure.

I mean I didn’t but I’m sure your self-righteousness makes you feel good
I should also add that nothing in the enws reporting says anything about the doctors "confirming" the heimlich was done correctly all that has been reported is that the resource officer rendered aid - where did you get this information?
bruxalle t1_j9teka1 wrote
Suuure.
fractalflatulence t1_j9tes8r wrote
Can you at least let the class know where you're getting the information that the doctor confirmed the heimlich was done correctly? I'm genuinely curious.
I wonder how a clinician would be able to tell if it was done correctly or not after the fact...
bruxalle t1_j9tf0vc wrote
I could, but I don’t want to talk to you anymore.
fractalflatulence t1_j9tfdsa wrote
That’s convenient

Wow. I'm surprised this could happen being surrounded by so many people. I guess whatever it was blocking his air was big enough to where it couldn't come back out. Scary and sad.
SadValleyThrowaway t1_j9n2drk wrote
This is probably a stupid question, but if the heimlich isn’t working, and he’s choking on something soft and malleable like a meatball, could you like smash the victims throat to break it up?
augie_wartooth t1_j9n3m5y wrote
It turns out there are, in fact, stupid questions.

I don’t know what went wrong. I kept throat punching him, but it didn’t seem to help!

I mean you could certainly try but I don’t think going ham on a choking persons windpipe is gonna help too much lol

What a horrible way to die. I know what it's like when you're choking on something and can't get control of the situation - it's absolutely terrifying. 😔

My daughter goes there. I know that sometimes horriblle things just happen, but I'm struggling to understand how, with a building full of trained people, so close to a hospital, could the kid have gone for more than half an hour without oxygen. I hope that we get some more info on the timeline.
tRillVA t1_j9ovac5 wrote
Not trying to be insensitive, but that’s a big kid. It’s possible that whoever was attempting to perform the Heimlich maneuver on him could not perform the abdominal thrusts effectively enough to clear the airway.
moonpeachburritofunk t1_j9oidb5 wrote
What was he eating, I bet mozzarella stick. Or pork rinds.
Ryanisreallame t1_j9oodnk wrote
Why are those your guesses?

I had horrible choking experiences with those foods. People don’t realize the danger. Totally not joking serious. Idk the hostility.
