Maybe it's me but a more plausible explanation is that people that live in more polluted areas also are more economically disadvantaged.

I wonder how much this correlates with living in a city being more mentally challenging/stressing than living somewhere rural on a farm with little to no air pollution.

I'm more concerned with the elevated cancer risk. SIL has lived in an area of "chronic non-attainment of NAAQS" for the last 35 +/- years. She's in the hospital fighting brain cancer. Thanks, industry.
