I wonder how much the stigma of the diagnosis played into this as well. I know mental health issues are often ignored and swept under the rug in these communities

Also, misbehaving black children are less likely to be marked for evaluation than white children in school. teachers assume they are misbehaving because they are badly behaved, whereas a misbehaving white student must have some problem going on.

But the reason is also that autism has been extremely expanded in its definition. Many previously separately listed mental, intellectual and social disabilities are now included in autism; even ADHD is now a form of autism.
