From other research I have reviewed, it causes inflammation of the tissue surrounding the olfactory bulb, which deprives the nerves of oxygen. Nasal steroids have been effective at reducing inflammation, but it has to be treated before perosmia or anosmia sets in to avoid long term loss of smell.
