E. coli is one of the most widely used organisms in biological research. Just about every single research project will utilize E. coli in some way, usually as little DNA replication factories.

I seem to remember learning in nursing school that we used the E.Coli bacteria to produce insulin due to its ability to rapidly reproduce.
