In the beginning of this year Deepmind laid off a big part of it's staff (just like many tech companies).The Deepmind research facility in Edmonton was even closed completely.

Could be that progress is actually slower or even halted because of this, or they kept the basic team and fired people like the blog writer for example.

They only really laid off operational staff, and closed their Edmonton office. All the Edmonton engineers were offered roles in Toronto/Montreal offices.

It sounds extremely dumb to fire your AI engineers at the beginning of 2023, when its plainly obvious the AI tsunami is about to hit. They have been employed for a decade now, when AI produced no economic returns, so no point laying off them now.
