There are many different Chinese businesses and research centers working on the development of machine learning applications, GPT style LLM's, etc. Why would one more company or research center jumping in the game all that surprising?

It's not surprising to anyone in the AI community. It's just surprising to people who watch CNN, MSNBC, Newsroom and FOX and think they now understand how the world works.

Well Tencent is a big fish. Owns 10% of Reddit too I believe? Could be interesting to see them enter the AI market.

True. Hopefully we'll be allowed to access them and they won't be essentially banned by the US like Huawei products, etc were.

It's not so much that it's surprising as it is the implications of such a massive company pouring its money into the project is either frightening or exciting depending on your point of view
