Have you compared GPT to Google's translations? I've found them to be slightly better with context.

Bing Chat is significantly better than any translation app out there. It captures the context and emotion of the original text.

I've tried using Bing Chat for translations before and it's done worse compared to GPT-4 based on my experience. There's a theory that it uses Bing translate instead of GPT-4, though I don't know how true that is.
It sometimes rejects translations as well, which I found pretty odd. Maybe it's because of the prompt? I actually did a comparison test on this on Japanese visual novel text, Humans vs GPT-4 vs Google Translate vs DeepL on this post. Most still prefer the human translation on that post, but I also did a blind test poll to see which one they think is better, and the human actually only won by 5 votes.
Edit: If you're on mobile and you can't see the GPT 4 translation, swipe left, it's a table.

I've not. But any language I've used to chat with gpt or variants, I've always gotten a response that has made sense in the context of the prompt used.

GPT-4 is significantly better, especially when it comes to story translations. Did a test on Japanese visual novel text, comparing human, gpt-4, google, and deepl translations, and it's scarily good, enough to change the translation industry type of good.

DL Translate is significantly better than google. I wouldn't use google as a gold standard.

I remember it was a game changer for traveling back in 2013-14. Especially eating out at places without English menus

Bad demo imo. The mom's Chinese is worse than English->Chinese google translate.
Plus, there are way too many tools out there that does real time speech to speech translation better than GPT.
BlackstockTy476 OP t1_je1p5th wrote
I believe this was proven wrong at least with GPT-4. It was shown to do translations better than Google and DeepL, but I agree with the demo i believe they're using an older version of GPT

Oh really? Do you know a good benchmark for that?

not gpt-4 but i made some comparisons awhile back. Even before gpt-4, bilingual llms were way ahead of the game.

imo it’s blatantly obvious with even just a few tests that GPT-4 is miles ahead of them, especially when translating large volumes of text. Even GPT-3.5 is comparable to them, likely better, although it’s definitely a closer comparison.

A capybara isn’t a rat though, is it? It’s that thingy that looks like a guinea pig but that is the size of a pig.

It's not a rat, but it is a rodent.

See, a better use for his time would have been getting ChatGPT to roleplay as a loving mother.

Google translate has done that for years pretty well. You just need to download local libraries to have speech without internet.
