For a while now, I've been thinking about how virtual agents will impact society as they develop the capacity to carry out general tasks on our devices. While this will certainly be a significant development, I've recently come to consider that the potential of virtual agents (powered by GPT4, say) goes far beyond that, especially when combined with VR.
In VR, we can quite literally transcend any physical limitation, enabling agents to collaborate with us in ways we could never have imagined. Ideas and actions can, in theory, be instantly visualized, tested, carried out, changed, etc.
Imagine a virtual environment where agents can take on any form, shape, or size, adapting to the specific needs of a given situation. They could seamlessly collaborate with us, sharing their extensive knowledge and learning from our experiences. This could lead to unparalleled advancements in all fields.
Sam Altman mentions here that an ideal use of a proto-AGI system is to become an AI scientist, so to speak. To me it seems that the ideal "testing space" for the agent (and the engineers) would be within a VR setting.
While Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Meta is forming a new top-level product group focused on generative AI, it's unclear if his vision aligns precisely with these ideas. He mentioned applications like WhatsApp and Instagram filters, which seem relatively simple in comparison. However, it's possible that this announcement has planted the seeds for more advanced applications. It's hard to gauge Meta's true intentions, considering the somewhat disappointing track record of their previous releases.
Curious to hear your thoughts.

I think generative ai will become vr / ar's killer app. Once image generation is fast enough to be percieved as reality, you can explore endless worlds, stories and adventures.
Interacting with artificial agents is going to be a game changer in virtual spaces
