It’ll come down to the architecture I think. If we manage to create some sort of super-intelligent language model, assuming we follow the current framework, I doubt it will create consciousness, as it seems to require a constant state of functioning, which isn’t how language models are used. On the other hand, if we tried to mimic the human brain’s architecture, I’m pretty confident we will be able to create conscious agents. At the end of the day, consciousness seems to be an emergent product of structure, and it follows that if an AI is structured in the same way as a conscious human, that AI will be conscious as well.
