Current state of quantum computers

Does anyone with greater understanding of quantum computers know the current state of quantum computers? Have there been any real major breakthroughs that are accelerating their use? Have we seen any practical applications of the computers yet?

This guy does yearly updates on quantum computing on youtube. He provides all the links for further reading.

It's a pretty confusing subject, but what I gather is scaling up number of qubits is going slowly but surely so far. There's been a few cool discoveries, though I don't have enough general knowledge to explain them well. No current sign of them being used for any new super exciting thing at the moment that I'm aware of.

I think it's still not clear, and a lot of scientists think, that maybe they won't be useful at all (at least in the way we want the to be).

Mainly because we are making suppositions about the nature of the quantum world that may be totally wrong.

Biggest breakthrough recently was some Australian scientists who managed to create an integrated quantum chip a few months back. It remains to be seen how easy it is to scale, and how reliable it is, but people seem to be optimistic. I’m not too sure on the specific details though.
