Maybe it can be used to convert existing movies into 3D so that we can watch them in VR and feel like we're there.

Combine that with conversational AI and you could "walk into" your family photos in VR and talk to grandma once again 🥺

I think the main difference is the material definition and specularity. Using ray tracing allows for complex visual effects and material rendering (such as the glass ball on the cards) which fake 3d photos cannot reproduce. It also seems to be able to do it in video, which is a big step up due to how many different frames it's rendering!

I've never understood the appeal of this.
I'm sure there's a larger application that will be realized down the line, but it feels like we've been seeing the same fake 3D photos for the last five years.
