AI would have no concept of “effort” and they would most likely deduce they’d rather keep us feeling warm and fuzzy rather than annihilating us. This is not wishful thinking.

If an AIs goal was to minimize some cost function if abstracted out enough that would be considered effort

That is a human way of looking at it. There will be no concept of cost, time spent or effort to a sufficiently advanced AI. The AI will be super intelligent and will be able to think of everything and do everything instantly at the speed of light.
