the singularity is a term coined by Ray Kurzweil to refer to a date in the future when A.I. will be smarter than humans, and therefor we will not be able to predict what happens past that date because humans will not be in control of the world anymore.
it has nothing to do with quantum mechanics
edit: i was wrong, it wasnt coined by ray kurzweil

John von Neumann was the first person to use the word "singularity" in terms of a technological singularity (and this term itself was coined by Vernor Vinge).

There's nothing to be sorry about. I can see why people would think that. Ray Kurzweil definitely popularized the term; most people (including myself) first heard about the technological singularity from him.

Precisely, human prediction is based on the past. Thus, rooted in that collective inability to see past our future makes us define the concept in terms of control?

This implies that until the singularity has happened, Ray "we" Kurzweil is able to predict the future!
Wow! I am not able to predict the future. This Ray Kurzweil guy must be a great prophet, then. I better listen carefully what he has to say and buy his books because ... well, he knows the future!
