I remember following his training as much as I could when I was a kid. Instead of JT I was obsessed with Lance and, as a massive Sailor Moon fan, was obsessed with space too. The type of access to training he had, as a civilian, was essentially impossible in the US after the Challenger disaster. IIRC he did an accelerated training program in a matter of months that would’ve normally been like 2 years long.

Lori Garver was in the middle of space training to take the mission in the early 2000s but the Russians were trying to raise as much money as they could to fund the flight. Bass and Garver both completed training in Russia and were medically cleared to go.

wasn't it because his investors backed out and he couldn't afford it? Not so much kicked out but ran into money troubles.

With the current climate and knowing the Russian culture around people like Lance, I would run the other way if I were him.
