The last eclipse, I made a cereal box viewer. It worked exceptionally well and the only cost was the cereal box, a small amount of tape, a tiny bit of aluminum foil. Even ignoring that you're getting cereal to eat, this viewer only costs about $3.

Last eclipse I was present for I put on a welding helmet with dark sunglasses underneath. That worked pretty good to look directly at the sun. Honestly it's cooler to look at the shadows from leaves and other things making crazy crescent patterns.

This is what my dad did. I travelled to a zone of a total eclipse near the millennium. It was overcast. Still an unforgettable experience. It was quite eerie.
