The Moon goes around the Earth, the Earth goes around the Sun, the Sun goes around the centre of the Milky Way: a supermassive black hole. As you read this you are currently orbiting a black hole. Money might make the world go round, but black holes make the universe go round.

Black holes are not just a curiosity; they are some of the most important objects for understanding how our universe works and how it came to be. And yet they are incredibly misunderstood; take everything you think you know about black holes and get rid of it.

This book will be a book about black holes like no other; it will journey beyond the event horizon and consider what the ‘inside’ of a black hole is truly like, and flip it on its head. It will take black holes and turn them from something beyond comprehension for the average person on the street to a level of understanding you never thought possible, through unique analogies and ideas the human brain has a hope of actually picturing. This book will show you why you should be calling them white mountains – and not black holes.

I can't remember if this documentary covers everything you're asking about, but the "Wonders Of..." by Dr Brian Cox are really informative.

Otherwise an oldie --but always a classic-- 13-part Doc series by Dr Carl Sagan "Cosmos". Some topics are a little outdated (or much more commonly known today, as opposed to the 80s, when this thing came out), but it's really about the passionate and coherent way Sagan talks about stuff that's pure gold.

If I may also recommend a film that doesn't go into any of what you're asking about, but is simply mesmerizing to watch "For All Mankind" by Al Reinert. It's a film/doc hybrid collage of all the Apollo Missions that makes one continuous Earth-Moon round trip.

You can always check online on TopDocumentaryFilms for some more recent stuff you can stream for free !

Contact was both a good movie and a fantastic book. I remember it sort of mixed fiction with some facts.

Radha Pyari Sandhir is a quantum physicist and author. She's written a book on quantum physics for kids, which is a great primer of the basics. It isn't published yet, but the first three chapters are free at http://quantumkittens.online

I'd recommend starting with a PBS series that I believe you can watch for free online called "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene.
