VPN. Also, wasn't this the expected outcome?

Australia passed a similar law a while ago, and both Google and Meta caved and are now paying for news content.

Yeah and it's shit. Go to news.google.com.au and all you get is the Murdoch press and right wing aligned shit. Used to get a good range of smaller outlets.

They should stop hosting media outlets that support this view, showing a snippet and byline shouldn't be a copyright issue and be deemed fair use.

If media outlets don't want to have their content appear in search results they should update their robots.txt

What is the thought process behind this? Google is driving clicks to these news providers by offering a snippet on Android. Once you click the headline, you get redirected to the website. Why should Google have to pay for that? If anything, the news sites should have to pay Google for the traffic.

If my understanding is correct, it’s in a response to a bizarre new Canadian law which requires a certain amount of media be published by Canadians. I guess they basically take the same stuff they’d be seeing anyway but redirect it through a Canadian website.

The Canadian content requirements are part of bill C-11, which affects YouTube more than Google News. This story is about bill C-18, which is similar to Australia's law that requires Google and Facebook to pay for the privilege of linking to news sites.

Friendly reminder that news aggregation services are available (e.g., Feedly). Additionally, Brave browser is free, and comes with built-in VPN, Ad and Tracker Shields, and Tor. Brave even allows for customizable SEO as defined by individual users (i.e., Brave Goggles).

We don't need Google; Google needs us (the actual end-users).

Edit: Google allows everyone (e.g., Amazon) to steal all your data via its Ads and Tag Manager services. Everyone not considering alternatives to Google is a fool.

what is a big ad network without people using it?

also we developed Focus, which sounds like it could be something you're into.

Because it is irrelevant to the article and they are just spamming it everywhere.

If Canada is correct Feedly and even your app should be paying for the news sites it shows as well.
